What is a Virtual Assistant?

What is a Virtual Assistant?
A Virtual Assistant (or simply VA) is an independent contractor, not an employee. They set their own rates, operating standards and policies, pay their own self-employment taxes, and manage the work and how it is carried out. They provide a wide range of services including but not limited to administrative, technical, or sometimes creative assistance to clients--usually to other independent entrepreneurs and solo and small businesses. Virtual assistants work from their own office (hence "virtual"), thus making it a fairly popular (and growing) profession. It is estimated that there are about 40,000-50,000 virtual assistants worldwide. Common modes of communication and data delivery include the Internet, File Transfer Protocol (FTP), and fax machine. Although the occupation gives a degree of independence, work is on a contractual basis, and a long-lasting cooperation is standard.

Outsourcing doesn't mean you have no control over the work you want us to complete. It means you forward it to an independent contractor who specializes in business support. As a virtual assistant, our primary role is to process your work to your complete satisfaction--and to ours. You are our client and we are your vendor.  Unlike most temporary workers or employees, we care about your business. It's not about money, it's about the survival of your business--and ours.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), the average small business owner spends up to 40% of his or her time on routine administrative tasks.
USA Today wrote: "The savings come from being able to concentrate efforts on building the business instead of balancing the checkbook and typing envelopes."
Commuting is not a problem for us. The work will get done even if we have bad weather or a sick child.
Hiring a Virtual Assistant has environmental benefits too. For each VA you hire, there is one less car on the road and a lot less paper being used.
